Clinical Trials Group

The Clinical Trials Group of the BAPM has been disbanded. This decision has been made because of major developments in the UK to facilitate the conduct of high quality clinical trials and other well designed studies, which have made the role of the BAPM Clinical Trials Group redundant. These developments include the creation of the Medicines for Children Research Network (MCRN), one of the topic-specific research networks with the UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC). Within the MCRN are a number of Clinical Study Groups (CSGs) including a neonatal CSG whose function is to facilitate the development of clinical research in neonates. MCRN has also funded the establishment of a network of neonatal units keen to collaborate in research (The Extended Neonatal Network). More recently, the MCRN has taken on responsibility for co-ordinating the activities of the non-medicines Paediatric research speciality group of this national initiative.

In maternity research, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists has created the National Reproductive Health Research Network (NRHRN). This network also includes a number of CSGs, including a Preterm Labour CSG and a Fetal Medicine CSG.

If you are in the UK and are developing a clinical trial or other well designed clinical study, you can contact the relevant CSG for support and guidance in helping you to develop your idea. If you are outside the UK and want to approach centres to participate in your research, you can also contact the relevant CSG to ask for their guidance.

All clinical research which is funded by a UKCRC partner (and this includes most UK national funding organisations who fund research through open national competition, including most research charities) are eligible for their study to be adopted on to the NIHR CRN Portfolio database. This is a database of all on-going studies giving information about the study and contact details of the investigators, as well as up-to-date recruitment information.

General guidance about this national initiative can be found on the NIHR Clinical Research Network Co-ordinating Centre website.
