BAPM is forming a working group to develop a Framework for Practice on therapeutic hypothermia for neonatal encephalopathy.

The Framework will build on and update the previous BAPM position statement on therapeutic hypothermia (TH)  for neonatal encephalopathy (NE) (2010) in the light of newer research and changes to clinical delivery and treatment practices in the UK.

The Framework for Practice will  include recommendations in the following areas:

  • The indications for therapeutic hypothermia including  consideration of the role of cotside electroencephalographic monitoring and guidance on situations currently not covered by high quality randomised controlled trials
  • Definitions  of active and passive cooling and their potential therapeutic use
  • Prognostication including MRI scanning and situations where reorientation of care might be appropriate.
  • Initiation and delivery of how therapeutic hypothermia should be initiated and delivered in a network based system of care.

The first meeting will be held on 19th December in London 11:00-15:00. Reasonable travel expenses will be covered.

If you are a current BAPM member and would like to volunteer to be on the working group please email the BAPM Office including a 1-2 paragraph statement about your relevant experience and interest by 31st October.

British Association of Perinatal Medicine (BAPM) is registered in England & Wales under charity number 1199712 at 5-11 Theobalds Road, London, WC1X 8SH.
