The BPSU team have written to paediatricians and neonatologists asking them to make sure they report all cases meeting the case definition of neonatal complications of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) to the BPSU in the first instance to ensure complete UK data collection. National BPSU data will be shared internationally.

The letter is in full below:

Dear Colleague,

The BPSU is sending out a weekly reporting card to capture cases of neonatal complications of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The active surveillance method pioneered and used by the BPSU is recognised as the gold-standard approach to determine population level incidence, accurate outcomes and comprehensive description of management strategies employed.

We are aware that multiple international registries have been established for similar cases to those captured by the neonatal complications of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) BPSU surveillance study.

We ask that UK paediatricians and neonatologists report all cases meeting the case definition of neonatal complications of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) to the BPSU in the first instance. This does not preclude additional involvement in other studies, but will help to ensure complete UK data collection. National BPSU data will subsequently be shared with appropriate international registries, helping to avoid duplication of effort and making sure that the highest quality data are used to inform care.

Best wishes,

BPSU team
