A new e-learning resource has been developed to improve educational support for children born preterm.
The resource has been developed by Professor Samantha Johnson and colleagues and is aimed at education professionals to help them understand the needs of children born pre-term. It can be used to support neonatal follow-up for preterm born children, providing parents with information about potential long term difficulties and teachers with strategies that can be used to support the learning of preterm born children at school.
Preterm birth is associated with an increased risk for cognitive, motor, attention and social-emotional problems which can have a profound impact on a child’s performance at school. Education professionals lack training and knowledge about preterm birth and parents often have to fight hard to secure additional support for their preterm child in school.
The funder for the resource is Action Medical Research. The resource was created with Loughborough University (Camilla Gilmore), University of Nottingham (Lucy Cragg and Heather Wharrad), University College London (Neil Marlow) and Ulster University (Vic Simms).
