BAPM has endorses a new Framework for Practice produced by the The National Neonatal Surgical Interest Group (NNSIG), a special interest group of the Neonatal Nurses Association.

The Framework for Practice 'Holistic feeding and nutritional management for the near term/term neonate, following bowel surgery' covers the nutritional and feeding management specifically for the infant that is born term or near term i.e. ≥ 34 weeks gestation and required abdominal surgery for a congenital bowel abnormality or acquired problem e.g. necrotising enterocolitis (NEC), perforation, gastroschisis, exomphalos duodenal atresia, anorectal malformation, Hirschsprung’s disease, meconium ileus, malrotation and volvulus.

The document aims to offer support and guidance on milk choice, feeding regimen, assessment of feed tolerance and managing fluid input and output for infants with abdominal surgical conditions. It is also intended to support and provide guidance for introducing and sustaining a safe, positive journey to oral feeding.
