BAPM is seeking members to join a working group to develop a framework for practice on bilious vomiting.
This group is being set up in response to the national GIRFT report which identified some problems with radiological support to neonatal units. This ranged from some units not having on-site capacity to do plain radiographs 24 /7, but was most notable in the management of babies who need upper GI contrast studies.
The commonest babies in this group are those that present in the first few post-natal days with bile stained or bilious vomiting. This can be a sign of GI obstruction but importantly can be an indicator of malrotation / volvulus.
The framework produced by the working group will aim to state some standards and define a framework for the management of these babies.
