BAPM is seeking members to join a working group to develop a framework for practice on perioperative support for the extremely premature infant.
Neonatal intensive care is delivered more frequently and to more extremely premature newborn infants than previously. There are frameworks for the general care of newborn infants. However, there are few frameworks that consider the perioperative care of an extremely premature newborn infant. This might result in variation to practice on a neonatal intensive care unit and the risk that outcome is affected.
This framework will offer a high level approach to perioperative care of extremely premature newborn infants for neonatal nurses, neonatal medical staff and paediatric anaesthetists. In addition, we aim to capture how we might best support families during their babies operation. The place where a necessary operation takes place or who delivers the anaesthetic are outside the scope of this framework.
Vacancies on the group are:
- NICU Consultant (from a surgical neonatal centre)
- LNU / SCU consultant
- Paediatric or Neonatal Trainee
- ANNP
- Nurse
- Dietician
- Psychologist
- Pharmacist
- Parents / carers
It is envisaged that this work will take approximately nine months and include 4-5 virtual meetings. Group members will also be asking to contribute to writing the framework between meetings.
To apply please complete the application form and return to the BAPM Office by 31 May.
