BAPM is seeking members to join a working group to develop a Framework for Practice on Standards to support safe management of the neonatal airway within neonatal services.
Tracheal intubation is a skill fundamental to neonatal intensive care. Due to a combination of advances in neonatal ventilation and reduced working hours, medical trainees and ANNPs have increasingly fewer opportunities to learn intubation and thus gain competence. In 2021 tracheal intubation was removed as a mandatory skill from the Core Syllabus for Paediatric Training (Progress+).
The proposed Framework for Practice will explore how neonatal units can ensure safe and effective emergency management of the neonatal airway, noting the potential implications for service delivery of resident senior trainees and/or consultants.
Vacancies on the group are:
- 1 NICU Consultant
- 1 LNU Consultant
- 1 SCU Consultant
- 1 level 2 Trainee
- 1 Neonatal Grid Trainee
- 1 ANNP
- 1 Neonatal Nurse
- 1 Network Manager / Director
- 1 Neonatal Consultant with current experience in training (e.g. CSAC / TPD)
No previous experience of BAPM working groups is required and applications from BAPM members will be given priority.
The first meeting will be held in July / September 2022, exact date TBC. It is envisaged that this work will take approximately nine months and involve 3-4 virtual meetings although more may be scheduled if needed.
To apply please complete the application form and return to the BAPM Office by 31 May.
