Neonatal care has developed over the last fifty years and practice has been strongly founded on both basic science and clinical research. Other practice has developed upon the strengths of clinical experience and observation. The recommendations that follow represent a professional view of the current best practice principles as they apply to neonatal care.

Using the evidence available at the time, working groups of BAPM in consultation with the membership, the Royal Colleges and the Neonatal Nurses Association prepared the first two editions of this document in 1996 and 2001. Each described the clinical and pastoral needs of sick and vulnerable infants and their families, and set a standard against which the quality of neonatal care could be appraised.
